Geographical Indications (GI)

Protecting the Origin, Reputation, and Unique Qualities of Regional Products

Overview

A Geographical Indication (GI) identifies goods that originate from a specific geographical area, where a particular quality, reputation, or characteristic of the product is essentially attributable to its place of origin. Well-known examples include Darjeeling Tea, Scotch Whisky, and Swiss Watches.

GI protection transforms a regional name into a collective intellectual property asset, preventing unauthorized use and preserving the authenticity and reputation of products linked to a defined territory.

At Lance IP, we assist associations, producer groups, manufacturers, and regional organisations in securing and managing GI protection across sectors such as food and beverage, agriculture, handicrafts, and textiles. Our focus is on building legally defensible GI frameworks that support quality assurance and long-term commercial value.

Our GI Practice Philosophy

We approach GI protection as a structured legal and governance exercise. Our work focuses on establishing a clear, verifiable link between geography, production practices, and product reputation, while enabling producer communities to manage and enforce GI rights effectively.

Case Studies

Regional Agricultural Association – Securing Global Identity

We advised a consortium of spice producers from a specific state on securing GI status for a unique, high-value agricultural crop. The challenge involved meticulously documenting the historical cultivation methods, the unique soil and micro-climate characteristics, and collecting historical sales evidence proving the product's distinct reputation over several generations. The successful registration provided the association with a powerful tool to prevent other states' producers from using the name, enabling them to command a 40% premium in export markets and standardize quality control among all registered members.

Handicraft Industry – Combating Unauthorized Branding

An association representing a traditional weaving craft known globally for its intricate patterns sought Lance IP's help to combat widespread commercialization by non-local manufacturers. We successfully registered the GI and then focused on enforcement. This involved sending legal notices and supporting civil suits to stop unauthorized manufacturers from using the GI name and its associated unique motifs in their marketing. The protection secured the livelihood of hundreds of traditional artisans and re-established the product's premium position in national showrooms.
